Here at Bokah, we’ve been keenly watching as ‘Brainfeeder’ become an international force, signing more and more insanely fresh acts; we’ve already brought you their artists Lapalux and Daedalus, but now we’re presenting you Azizi Gibson, who is sure to satiate your hip hop taste buds.
Born in Frankfurt, raised in Bangkok, Azizi demonstrates how you don’t need to have grown up in an American ghetto to have swag. There’s a lot of hip hop artists around at the minute, so you might think it would be difficult to sound different but Azizi is a fresh sound amongst the melee; he must be special if he’s been signed by ‘Brainfeeder’ and he’s had tracks produced by Knxwledge (another Bokah special- just saying.)
His newest tracks “Intro (yammaha)” and “Purple Swag” have some strong parallels with Drake, but with more cussing and sounds of shotguns. I love Drake, I love these tracks, but Azizi’s previous work sounds to be more original. The shots and swearing seem to take the tracks a little close to the edge of hip hop cliché, but if his older tracks “Fish Scale” and “Booshie Champagne” are anything to go by, I anticipate we’ll be hearing some great original tunes in the near future.
“Booshie Champagne” samples “Summer Breeze” by the Isley Brothers, a real 1970’s classic, laid behind some equally cool lyrics. Its laidback vibe beckons the summer the UK weather has been carefully avoiding, and it will be the first track on my BBQ playlist when the opportunity finally arrives.
Despite his egocentric lyrics and music videos that show him high 90% of the time, I can’t help but love his music, if not just for boosting my street cred, but for his abundance of original material in his chosen genre.
Check out my favourite track “Fish Scale” below and take a few minutes to watch his latest video for “Explosivez (Phuck DLX)” on Brainfeeder.
